Destination weddings right in our backyard - Rochester Democrat and Chronicle

Say "destination wedding" and a beach in Maui might come to mind, or lush gardens in Rome. Or, more and more, the Finger Lakes. "Ninety percent of our brides are from out of town," says Stacy Ercan of Stacy K Florist in Rochester. "They may have vacationed here, have summer homes in the Finger Lakes or have grown up here. According to people in the industry, "winery weddings" and "weddings on the lake" are now some of the most popular search terms—ones that are pointing the way here. To the classic, gracious, old-world charm of Belhurst Castle, Esperanza Mansion, and Geneva on the Lake. The vineyard-covered landscapes of Keuka Lake's hillsides. The open, natural lakefront along Cayuga, with stone-wall remnants of a mill's ruin and unique Victorian architecture. In the last ten years, the number of couples choosing venues along Canandaigua, Seneca, Keuka and Cayuga lakes has skyrocketed. Event and catering managers from Victor to Cayuga Lake are reporting that weddings booked by couples from New York City are way up. And bookings from people who have always known the area's appeal—couples in Rochester, Syracuse and Buffalo—are... Long before the term "destination wedding " came into vogue, it was mostly local brides and grooms celebrating at places like Canandaigua's Granger Homestead and Sonnenberg Gardens, the Inn on the Lake, Bristol Mountain Resort, Casa Larga... Canandaigua was particularly popular, with establishments like Thendara, Lincoln Hill Inn, Steamboat Landing, and the Lakeshore House—but these no longer exist. Yet when the demand grew, people took note. To almost paraphrase Aristotle, wedding venues abhor a vacuum. As more couples got the idea that it's all about the destination, many of our region's standbys were quick to update and adjust, and newer venues added weddings to their offerings. Bristol Harbour Resort took advantage of its spectacular view over Canandaigua Lake by adding a hotel and then an expansive Great Room for 350 guests, complementing the original dining room and terrace for weddings. In 1999, Glenora Wine Cellars built its inn in response to ever-increasing tourism. "Weddings are making a huge impact on the area," says event manager Kathy Marchenese. Glenora also played to its strengths, from the warmth of a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace in the dining room to an open covered terrace. Both overlook the vineyards and gentle hillside down to Seneca Lake, and a glass wall in the dining room brings the outside in at all times. Nine years ago, the Aurora Inn did "about a dozen" weddings a year, says Heather Davidson of Inns of Aurora on Cayuga Lake. "Last year, we did 60. ". Built in 1833, the Aurora Inn was a trading post off the Erie Canal. Rebranded in 2011, The Inns of Aurora now includes the Aurora Inn, E. B. Morgan House, Roland House, the Fargo Bar & Grill, Dorie's Bakery and the Village Market in tiny, picturesque Aurora. All the inns have been renovated in the last 13 years. Casa Larga Vineyards and Winery built their Bella Vista ballroom to meet demand, with a half-circle bump-out dance area and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the vineyard and vista. Gigantic party tents on the grounds of Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion State Historic Park and the Granger Homestead in Canandaigua now accommodate larger weddings. Couples with smaller guest lists still take over the first floor of the Granger Federalist mansion, with its three formal parlors, library, dining room and four porches. Larger wedding receptions are now under the tent on one of the Granger's sweeping lawns in its historic city neighborhood. For the day, couples "own" a mansion. Weddings and receptions in these luxury tents—complete with carpeted floors, dance floors, chandeliers, ceilings swathed in fabric, heaters and fans—have become the ideal way for historic venues and wineries along the lakes to take advantage of... The Inn on the Lake's lakeside tent has a permanent frame. Woodcliff Hotel and Spa has a new outdoor tent for larger weddings of up to 400 people, in addition to its ballroom. With the continued growth in Finger Lakes wineries—there are now over 200—new venues are appearing as well. Glenora received a "Best of Weddings" rating on The Knot, the popular website for weddings, for 2014 and 2015. Woodcliff Hotel and Spa in Fairport recently received a 2015 "Brides Choice" award on WeddingWire. Country Living, Martha Stewart Living, Gourmet.
